Panama City Beach – Large Marina Planned for old Panama City Airport Site

February 8, 2010 · Leave a Comment

PANAMA CITY BEACH — Thanks to the News Herald for this update.  Developers are moving forward to place a large marina at the end of the runway of the Panama City-Bay County International Airport once air operations move to the new airport near West Bay.

This will be a nice addition to the Panama City Beach Area.  There are not many places to keep a boat when you are visiting Panama City Beach.  I had a potential guest ask about parking and assess for a 24ft center console boat the other day.  The marina would be about 15 miles from our Condos for rent in Panama City Beach, FL http://www.bestpanamacitybeachcondo.com  at Celadon Beach Resort.

Papers have been filed with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for a project that will include a half-acre open water or wetlands excavation and an 8-acre “uplands” excavation to make way for a marina with 117 wet slips and 230 to 240 dry storage slips.

The total project area is about 16 acres, including a “15.0-acre upland cut marina basin, a 0.7-acre entrance channel connecting to eastern Goose Bayou, and a 0.3-acre flushing conveyance connecting to western Goose Bayou,” according to DEP documents.

The marina is part of the redevelopment plans for the old airport site being put in place by the St. Andrew Bay Land Company, said Bill Cunningham, point man for the mixed-use project, which includes homes and apartments, walking trails and retail businesses.

“Part of what makes this property valuable is its access to the water,” Cunningham said Friday.

A community open house was held last summer during which residents could view conceptual ideas for the 700-acre site that envisioned different types of residences as well as a possible marina and large, light-industry employer.  Cunningham said plans for the marina were filed with the DEP and the U.S. Corps of Engineers in late January. Papers filed with the DEP call for construction to begin in 2011 with a completion date of 2016.

“No permits get issued unless we meet their criteria,” he said, noting that “sea grass issues” may come into play. “The agencies will ensure that there are no adverse impacts to the environment,” he said.  Cunningham said a comprehensive plan for the entire 700-acre site was submitted to Panama City officials in December.  “We are just in the top of the first inning,” he said. “This is consistent with what we have always planned. Now we are just waiting for the process to move forward.”

St. Andrew Bay Land Company is a subsidiary of Leucadia Financial Corp., which purchased the land from the airport for $56.6 million in 2007. The money was a critical element in the $318 million financial package to build the new airport.  Ownership of the current airport site will be transferred to St. Andrew once air operations are relocated to the site of the new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport near West Bay in late May.

Panama City Beach – Take Your Dog to Dinner at Salty Sue’s

February 5, 2010 · Leave a Comment

PANAMA CITY BEACH — Thanks to the News Herald for most of this article.  No more need for doggie bags…dogs mop up the scraps at Salty Sue’s!

Salty Sue’s Restaurant became the first Bay County restaurant to let the dogs in.

Celadon Beach Resort does not allow guests to have pets, however owner’s pets are OK.   http://www.bestpanamacitybeachcondo.com

Maybe we will try Salty Sue’s next time we are in town.  I noticed a bunch of customers there a couple of weeks ago when we drove by.  If you have tried Salty Sue’s leave a comment and let us know about the menu.  I don’t know if our three beagles are well behaved enough to go to Salty Sue’s which is only a mile or so from Celadon.  I am sure they would have a big time!

I think there is an area around some of the Pier Park restaurants where dogs are allowed in addition to the dog beach by the pier.

“We have a lot of customers who have dogs as part of the family,” restaurant co-owner Billy Joe Knowles said Thursday.  The Back Beach Road restaurant opened an outdoor, dog-friendly section to allow families to bring everyone, including the family dog. The city passed an ordinance allowing dog-friendly restaurants about two years ago, but Bay Families with Dogs waited to see if the state would continue to support dog dining before actively approaching restaurant owners last winter, executive director Stephanie Somerset said.

Somerset said other restaurants are showing interest, but so far only Salty Sue’s has completed the necessary paperwork — something Knowles said took only two days to finish.

On Thursday afternoon, more than 20 dogs, small and large, piled on the porch or played in a fenced area, while owners munched on chips, wine and beer. Knowles said the first “Yappy Hour” event was successful. He hopes to hold doggie socials monthly but dates are pending.

The rules are easy enough to follow: hand sanitizer sits on every table and rules are posted on the door and entrance. Dogs aren’t allowed to touch dishes or items involved in food service and are allowed only outside.

“As long as their outside, it’s fine,” said Virginia Wright, who is vacationing from Ontario. She and John Clare, also of Ontario, sat inside the cozy bar area near the door leading to the dog section. They said they won’t be deterred by a pooch on the porch. Sue’s is among their favorite spots.

Back outside, dogs barked and bounced and families laughed despite cool, windy weather. Bette Holden of Lynn Haven held her teacup poodle, Mattie, feeding her a doggie meal cooked up special for the event.  “This is great. We love going anywhere where we can bring our dogs,” Holden said.

The event also gave Karen Stevens, Pets Are Working Saints co-chairwoman, a chance to talk about her organization, which takes pets to visit places such as nursing homes and children’s programs. Stevens held her dog, Daisy’s, leash and talked about fundraising. By 5:30 p.m., several $10 bills were in the donation jar.

Panama City Beach is just beginning to develop as a pedestrian-friendly community, Mayor Gayle Oberst said. She brought her two long-haired dachshunds, The Red Baron and Little Boy Blue, to support the new dog-friendly restaurant, she said. Oberst said she expects more restaurants to follow Salty Sue’s lead. Pedestrian-friendly and dog-friendly go hand in leash.

Somerset hopes Oberst is right. She wants to brand Panama City Beach as a dog-friendly place for tourism, bringing even more business. Vacationers already call her to say they are changing travel plans to stay in Panama City Beach because of dog-friendly beaches, parks and now a restaurant, she said.

“In a way, the government is throwing restaurants a bone,” Somerset said. “This is really a way for government to help stimulate the local economy.”

Panama City Beach – Sites seek to make the most of ‘social media’ follow the News Herald and their Staffers on Twitter

January 24, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Panama City Beach – Interested in being the first to know what is going on in Panama City Beach?  At the end of this short article be Tony Simmons, the online editor, the News Herald Twitter addresses are listed. The explosion of so-called “social networks” not only has changed how people use the Internet, but also who those people are and what they expect the ‘Net to do for them. And it’s a mistake to dismiss these changes as a fad.

Facebook, which was originally created as a college networking site for 20-somethings, had its biggest growth area last year among 35- to 49-year-olds, and it added twice as many new users ages 50 to 64 than it did in the under-18 range. The current hot phenomenon, Twitter, added 21 million unique users last year — a growth of 2,000 percent over the year before.

We fit into this group as we try to market our Panama City Beach condos at Celadon Beach Resort http://www.bestpanamacitybeachcondo.com  follow us at www.twitter.com/jerryeyler

(These stats are from the Nielsen company and were discussed in a recent Freedom Communications workshop.)

What does this mean for people in the business of communicating? What’s the next hot social media platform, who will use it, and how can we best serve your information and entertainment needs there? Honestly, like lots of businesses, we’re trying to figure that out.

What we think we know for sure is that there’s a personal connection to information sharing in these social media that is as important as the message. Information is relevant because your friends think it’s important enough to share. You engage with the message, own it, and dialogue about it.

Additionally, there’s a level of trust implicit because the info is coming from people you picked as Facebook friends or you decided to “follow” on Twitter. As an information gatherer and clearinghouse, we take that trust very seriously, and we know that the moment we break that trust or overwhelm you with messages you aren’t interested in, you’ll stop following us.

And while we want you to follow us, we also recognize the value of following you. For years, news outlets have used the “listening post” model of gathering information and opinion. That is, going to the coffee houses and barber shops — wherever people gather and converse — to take the pulse of the community on issues of local or global importance.

Now we’re listening to you all day long as you tweet about your lives, or post status updates, or share photos and videos. We’re taking your suggestions (and criticisms) and following up on your leads. (We learned about the closure of Trigo cafe via Twitter, for instance.)

If you tweet and you’d like to follow us, check out @The_News_Herald for the latest news and @NH_Sports for — you guessed it. You can catch some staffers too: me @midnightonmars; Will Glover @wdglover; Matt Dixon @Mdixon55; S. Brady Calhoun @SBradyCalhoun; Scarlet Sims @ScarletSims; Mike Cazalas @mikecaz; Brad Milner @BradMilner. There are many others from various departments as well — advertising, production and marketing.

Drop us a 140-character line.

Peace.

Panama City Beach – 8 Restaurants known for Waterfront Dining

January 21, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Panama City Beach – PCB Daily had the following post about waterfront dining in Panama City Beach.  We have visited a few of the restaurants so I have inserted my own comments.  Take a look at the suggestions and give us your comments.  All of the restaurants are only a short drive from our Panama City beach Condos at Celadon Beach Resort  http://www.bestpanamacitybeachcondo.com

What could be better than a relaxing and appetizing meal in the company of someone special? How about a gorgeous view of the water to complement the experience? In Panama City Beach, there’s no shortage of beautiful waterfront settings that will turn any meal into a special occasion – check out our guide (in no particular order) to some of the best.

Lime’s Bayside Bar and Grill. One of Panama City Beach’s favorite waterfront spots, Lime’s is located at the Bay Point Marriott Golf Resort & Spa, and is accessible either by foot or by boat. With its tin roof and sprawling docks, Lime’s offers visitors a casual atmosphere and some of the best views around. Try the grilled fish tacos or the mango chipotle BBQ beef brisket. Open Wednesday thru Sunday, 11:00 am to sunset. Call (850) 236 6000 for more details.

We have not been to Lime’s have you?  What is your favorite dish?

Bayou Joe’s Marina Grill. Located in historical downtown Panama City behind the courthouse, Bayou Joe’s is a great choice for those seeking a relaxed atmosphere away from the beach. Enjoy rustic waterfront views of Massalina Bayou, friendly service, and a great menu including a fantastic breakfast selection. Open Monday thru Saturday from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Sundays 7:00 am to 7:30 pm. Call (850) 763 6442 for more details.

We have not been to Bayou Joe’s.  What is your favorite dish?

Schooners Last Local Beach Club. A Panama City Beach favorite, where both locals and visitors go to enjoy delicious food, oceanfront views, and live entertainment. Schooners is an open-air hangout that has been serving up fresh seafood and good times for many years, and a cannon is fired every night to announce the legendary sunset. It really doesn’t get much better. Don’t miss “The Beach Party”, Schooners’ famous seafood platter consisting of shrimp, grouper, oysters and hushpuppies. Open 7 days a week from 11:00 am until late. Call (850) 235 3555 for more details.

We try to go to Schooners for lunch almost every time we visit Panama City Beach.  The grouper sandwiches and baskets are our favorite thing to order.  Nice spot to hang out.

Pineapple Willy’s. Home of the famous Jack Daniel’s BBQ ribs, Pineapple Willy’s is the ultimate in casual waterfront dining. Dine outside on the covered pier, or inside where sports lovers can watch the big game on one of the many plasma TV screens. There’s something for all tastes, including seafood, prime rib, salads, sandwiches and a great kid’s menu. When the sun goes down Pineapple Willy’s is the place to be, with incredible live entertainment on the Pier Bar. Open 7 days a week from 11:00 am till late. Call (850) 235 1225 for more details.

Lots of our guests love Willy’s.  We have been there once and the food was ok.  We visited in the fall and hit the t-shirt sale for Christmas presents.  Our kids have gone to Pineapple Willy’s with friends on spring break and summer visits.

Uncle Ernie’s Bayfront Grill. Visit beautiful historic St. Andrew’s Marina, located just ten minutes from Panama City Beach, for a memorable dining experience. Uncle Ernie’s offers fine dining in a casual atmosphere complemented by breathtaking waterfront scenery. Diners can arrive by either land or water, and once seated, will have a hard time choosing from the sensational menu and wine list. Pick from items such as sautéed shrimp and sea scallops with angel hair pasta, grouper pigneri with shrimp, or the award winning crab cakes. A superb choice for any occasion. Uncle Ernie’s is open 7 days a week from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm. Call (850) 763 8427 for more details.

We have not been to Uncle Ernie’s.  What is your favorite dish?

Spinnaker’s Paradise Grill. Boasting a central Panama City Beach location on Thomas Drive, Spinnaker has evolved from a night spot popular with the younger crowd to a fantastic restaurant geared towards families and diners of all ages. The club still rocks at night, but Paradise Grill provides a relaxed, oceanfront setting for lunch and dinner. Serving up fresh local seafood, steaks, burgers, salads and healthy wraps, Spinnaker’s Paradise Grill sits overlooking the soft white sands and sparkling gulf waters. Diners can enjoy front row seats to the world’s most beautiful sunset and a mouthwatering menu, all in one perfect location. Open from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm, 7 days a week. Call (850) 234 7892 for more details.

We have not been to Spinnaker’s.  What is your favorite dish?

The Shrimp Boat Restaurant. Head to historic St. Andrew’s for an exquisite waterfront dining experience with a difference. Architecturally modeled after a 19th-Century Cuban Cigar Factory, the Shrimp Boat restaurant is 3 stories high and over 24,000 square feet. This exciting new eatery features a classic seafood fine dining menu, a sushi bar, banquet facilities, and a 55-foot long bar overlooking Smiths Yacht Basin. The Shrimp Boat is also home to Gracie Rae, a casual bar and grill where the great food goes hand in hand with outdoor dining and gorgeous waterfront views. The Shrimp Boat is open daily for dinner at 4:30 pm, and Gracie Rae is open for both lunch and dinner, daily at 11:30 am. Call (850) 785 8706 for more details.

We have been to the Shrimp Boat a couple of times.  The food is good and the view of the harbor is nice.  We enjoy a walk around St. Andrew’s before or after dinner.

The Boatyard. A popular local hangout, the Boatyard is located overlooking the calm waters of Grand Lagoon. Its prime waterfront setting is by no means the only reason the Boatyard is a Panama City Beach favorite. A Key West inspired menu includes items such as cilantro spiced mahi-mahi, key lime garlic shrimp, and grilled Caribbean jerk chicken. Don’t miss a Boatyard specialty, key lime pie on a stick. This mouthwatering dessert consists of creamy and tart key lime pie with a graham cracker crust, dipped in dark chocolate, frozen and served old-fashioned popsicle style. Yum! Open 7 days a week from 11:00 am. Call (850) 249 9273 for more details.

The Boatyard which is behind Captain Andersons has turned into our favorite seafood restaurant.  We went to the Boatyard one night when the wait at Captain Anderson’s was 2hours.  The Boat Yard was half of that and we ended up at the bar and decided to eat at the bar.  They have specials each night.  I had grouper cheeks and cheese grits one night that was fantastic.  As mentioned above the key lime garlic shrimp is good too!  The Boatyard opens again in February so we were not able to eat there when we were in PCB last week.

Please let us know your favorite place to dine on the water in the Panama City Beach area.
