Panama City Beach - Fishing Report

April 8, 2008 · No Comments

My friend Captain James Pic is a fishing guide in Panama City.  As a light tackle guide James believes in well balanced equipment, presentation of the bait and knowing where the fish are found. That is something he can offer you that few in the area can. As a native, there are very few places in the waters around Panama City Florida that James has not fished. Captain James gets followed by other guides on a regular basis.

Captain James latest fishing report from April 2nd follows:

Arron Reader and his father in law, Alton, came down Monday for a trout trip of a life time. It was cold, cloudy and blowing but the trout were hot and eager to eat. We caught close to 150 fish on DOA and popping corks with some nice keepers to boot.  Later in the morning we went after spanish, catching a few of those, when Alton landed a big pompano on a spanish jig.  No suprise, they usually shop up in that same bay spot every year.  The trout bite has been good all week and should continue. The spanish bite is going strong with fish popping all over the bay.  When fishing for spanish use jigs and Gotchas! while the fish are submerged. If they come up later on in the morning pull out the trusty bubble rig and get ready to have fun.

Panama City Fishing Forecast:

There are a few cobia showing up along the beach.  I like to anchor up, look for pompano and wait for cobia.  This will continue for a month or so.  Although the spanish have shown up the big push is probably a few days away. We catch those up until late in the year. They just get bigger.  Out on the flats, I’m seeing more trout than I have seen in ten years. I’m one of the few guides that can say that. We have been absolutely hammering them along with some reds.  Of course that will continue throughout the summer.
Last, April is a great month for fly action and topwater. Trout, reds and palegics fill our bays and it is not uncommon to have 100 fish trips.  Some years, the bonita will show up just outside the pass for some great light tackle and fly action.  I’ll keep you posted.
Hope you catch that biggen’ this year.
