Panama City Beach / WALTON COUNTY – Women living along the 30A corridor are known for their creativity and spirit. That spirit really comes to life when there is a cause close to their hearts.

This section of 30A is a short drive from our Panama City Beach Condo http://www.bestpanamacitybeachcondo.com

As people around the nation recognized Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, a group of women who meet Monday through Friday for swim exercises wondered what they could do to help. The women’s answer and inspiration came from the movie “The Calendar Girls.”

Copying the movie’s idea, 12 members of the Polkadot Pool Pussycats, or PPPs, decided taking their clothes off to help find a cure would be the least they could do.

“We have all known the disease,” said PPP leader Didon Comer. “So many of our friends have gone through it.” Didon rented the movie for the benefit of members who had not seen it and by the time it ended, any who were hanging back were in. “After watching the movie, the girls were all fighting for a spot,” said Comer, but only 12 could be included this year.

“We just looked at each other and said, ‘We can do that,’ ” said Nancy McConnell. “The women in England who did this raised half-a-million dollars!”

Comer is Miss January, her birthday month. Rounding out the 12 Calendar Girls of 30A are: Jan Kubacki, Sandy Luchtefeld, Patti Johnson, Redd Vizard, Bert Summerville, Karen White, Nina Horn, Kris Chavez, McConnell, Judy Foster and Dottie Hidell. Chavez did all the photography except the shot of her, where her husband, Manny, took over.

“I can now say I have been naked at The Red Bar,” said Chavez with a laugh.

However, the women, whose ages range from 48 to 75, all agree the shots are “tastefully draped nudes” of which their husbands or significant others proudly approve.

“My husband thought it was hysterically funny at first, but I think all the men are proud,” Summerville said. “Some men like to have a sweet young thing on their arm. But we all have fabulous backgrounds and have contributed to make our lives better. We have so much to offer society. I do feel we are beautiful women inside and out.”

Each woman secured a sponsor for her page and most shoots were done on location at the sponsor’s business. Sponsors included Cafe Thirty-A, The Red Bar, Richard Arriaga’s Pearls Gone Wild, Magpie’s jewelry, Davis Properties, The Back Door Gallery, Edward Jones, 30A TV, Bud & Alley’s, Davis Properties, La Botana Cafe, Restaurant Fire and Destin Realty.

An open-to-the-public launch party will be held in December when the calendars are ready. After expenses, all proceeds go to breast cancer research. The calendars will sell at the sponsor’s shop.

“It’s going to be a quality item,” said Chavez, who hopes to raise at least several thousand dollars from sale of the calendars for $25 each.

“The disease touches all of us and leaves such a profound effect on each and every one of us,” said Foster. For more pictures and the link to buy the calendar go to

Panama City Beach – An Alabama man’s pride in hauling in what he and three fishing buddies thought was a near-record size grouper off St. George Island last summer has turned into prosecution.

If you are at our Panama City Beach Condo http://www.bestpanamacitybeachcondo.com and thinking of catching the big one, I suggest fishing with Captain James Pick to keep out of trouble. Let me know if you need his number.

Billy Daniels, of Moody, Ala., agreed Wednesday to a deferred prosecution deal with the State Attorney’s office in Apalachicola after a three-month state investigation revealed the fish – 82” long and 66” around – was not a Warsaw grouper, as Daniels and his crew believed.

Instead, DNA testing ordered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission determined from frozen meat samples that it was a goliath grouper, a species protected by both state and federal laws.

After reviewing the test results with FWC investigator Eric Johnston, assistant state attorney Jarred Patterson agreed to charge Daniels, who captained the boat, with a second degree misdemeanor, possession of goliath grouper, which can be punishable by as much as 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

The deferred prosecution agreement calls for Daniels to be fined $150, which Patterson said was typically sought with first offenses. In addition, Daniels agreed to donate $150 to the state’s Wildlife Alert Reward program, which offers cash incentives for reporting to FWC those in possible violation of fish and wildlife laws, or boating under the influence of alcohol.

“As long as he keeps his nose clean and has no violations, at the end of a probationary period the charges will be dropped,” said Johnston.

The investigator said given Daniels’ cooperation, and no demonstrated intent to break the law, he and the prosecutor had no interest in pursuing further charges.

“I never had an ounce of trouble with him,” said Johnston. “He could have told me that he didn’t have any fish and there’s nothing I could have done about it. He has never been anything but cooperative.”

Instead, Daniels provided an Alabama Department of Natural Resources officer with a three-pound plastic bag of frozen fillet from the enormous fish, caught June 25 on an artificial reef about 15 miles southeast of St. George Island.

Daniels and his crew filleted the grouper on the dock of Bay City Lodge, but didn’t have equipment to weigh it, so instead used a conventional formula to estimate it at about 446 pounds.

Had it been a Warsaw, it would have rivaled the world record of 436 pounds, 12 ounces, set by Capt. Steve Haeusler, fishing out of Destin on Dec. 22, 1985.

The largest goliath grouper ever landed in Florida was a 680-pounder caught off Fernandina Beach in 1961, about three decades before the federal ban was put in place.

No sooner had a photograph of Daniels’ remarkable catch made the rounds when some careful observers began questioning whether the crew had mistakenly snared a goliath grouper, the so-called jewfish, thinking it was a Warsaw. The FWC agreed to investigate.

“He said he keeps Vic Dunaway’s fish identification book on his boat,” Johnston said. “He said he’s caught goliath grouper before and let them go and he understood the rule. He just made a mistake.”

After receiving the sample from the Alabama DNR officer, Johnston had it sent to FWC’s laboratory in St. Petersburg. Forensic biologist Hector Cruz Lopez conducted the testing by comparing the DNA test results of Daniels’ fish against confirmed DNA profiles of goliath, Warsaw and three other types of grouper.

‘You need to be sure of what you’re catching and what you’re bringing in,” said Johnston. “Know the laws. Know what’s legal and illegal.”

Panama City Beach – Capt. James Pic says that the Pass fishing heating up. The reds are biting in the pass. I managed two 20lb fish in between Ray’s fish yesterday. Fishing was good with some blues mixed in. Bait was easy to get.
There are several ways to catch the reds in the pass. One is to anchor with a live bait the other is to drift with a live bait. Some have good luck fishing Gulp baits on the bottom.
The flounder bite has turned on some with only a couple of weeks left for that.

Panama City Beach Fishing / Hunting:

Fish for reds in the pass will be good throughout the winter. Afternoon fishing will bring blues and bonito with the moving tide.
Flounder are still on the move for a couple more weeks.
The trout have moved to and into the bayous and creeks

I have been spending a lot of time bow hunting. I have taken one deer, passed up many chances with some small deer. I saw a good buck last week and two more last night, all out of range.

Duck season starts next week. I have a few days available during the first phase and some days available for singles.

Target Species: Winter fishing has started, little tougher to fish but with the right guide always fish to catch. See Captain Pic at www.jp2fish.com

Want to fish or hunt with Captain James? We have some Panama City Beach Condo availability for you http://www.bestpanamacitybeachcondo.com at Celadon Beach Resort.

Panama City Beach – Airport executive director Randy Curtis told the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sent a letter Thursday to the Federal Aviation Administration, giving its approval for the 1,600-foot extension. The extension will lengthen the new airport’s runway to 10,000 feet allowing international flights to easily land.

“We are ready to go” on the extension’s construction as soon as the FAA signs off on the Corps’ recommendation, Curtis said after the meeting.

Not only are airport officials hopeful the new facility will make its projected May 18 grand opening, “it’s more than a goal; it will happen,” Curtis told the chamber crowd.

Curtis briefed the crowd on the construction progress of the new airport’s 120,000 square feet of terminal space, 2.5 miles of main access road and the facility’s 16,000-square-foot baggage handling area, which he called “truly state-of-the-art technology.”

The new airport will give you great access to our Panama City Beach Condo http://www.bestpanamacitybeachcondo.com

PANAMA CITY BEACH – The Junior Service League’s Holly Fair, presented by Coastal Community Bank, is celebrating its 21st year with the Spirit of Giving.

Our Panama City Beach Condo guests http://www.bestpanamacitybeachcondo.com this weekend have a special shopping opportunity.

The theme for the annual shopping extravaganza at Boardwalk Beach Resort will be the focus of a new placement booth, where guests can see how the proceeds made at the event go back into the community.
“I think for a long time people just thought it was a fun shopping event,” said Michelle Lacewell, public relations chairman. Lacewell explained that after the Junior Service League’s expenses of the event, such as printing flyers and invitations and renting the Boardwalk Beach Resort & Conference Center, all of the proceeds go directly into programs and services for the community.

A special preview part will be presented from 6-10 p.m. Nov. 12 by Maharaja’s Fine Jewelry & Gifts. Tickets are $50 to the party, which will include live music, hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and a silent and live auction. Browse the silent auction full of treasures, and Scott Rossman will host a live auction. Goody bags for each guest will be provided by Maharaja’s.

With more than 70 merchants this year, it is easy to see why the focus has been on shopping. Guests can take advantage of the selection and early one-stop shopping, while merchants can kick off their sales for the holiday season. “A lot of them will do pricing and deals that they wouldn’t do inside their stores,” Lacewell said. Holly Fair, voted “Best of Bay” for a third year in a row, offers unique gifts, jewelry, accessories and holiday-themed items. Shopping is Friday through Sunday, with $5 general admission each day.

In addition, there is a Champagne Brunch from 8 to 10 a.m. Nov. 13. The special ticketed event, $25, presented by Gulf Coast Dermatology offers exclusive early admission to Holly Fair, while guests enjoy brunch, a fashion show and live entertainment. “Brunch is a historic part of the event,” Lacewell said. New this year, the Blue Moose Bar and Grille, located in Boardwalk’s Convention Center, will be hosting Girls’ Night Out at Holly Fair from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 13. The Blue Moose will be offering drink specials for women shopping at Holly Fair. “We wanted to encourage women to come in droves,” Lacewell said.

And for sports lovers, Blue Moose will host SEC Football Saturday on Nov. 14 from 1 to 8 p.m. “You can shop and then go and check out the game,” Lacewell said. In addition to Moose’s big screen TVs, it offers a full menu featuring fresh seafood and steaks, wings and chicken finger baskets, as well as a selection of beer and a full bar. Lacewell said this should give the guys a good break from the shopping.

Shopping

Shopping is from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 13, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 14 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Boardwalk Beach Resort, 9600 S Thomas Drive, Panama City Beach. General admission: $5; free for ages 12 and under. More info: www.jslpanamacity.org

Panama City Beach – If you are going to be in Panama City Beach or staying at a Panama City Beach Condo http://www.bestpanamacitybeachcondo.com this Sunday you might consider going to this festival at the Spinnaker Beach Club…

Clean water is the cornerstone of our quality of life and our economy here in the Panhandle. Whether it’s surfing, diving, boating, recreational fishing, or the historic tradition of commercial fishing, maintaining clean water is at the heart of each of these endeavors.

The proceeds from the event directly benefit the Surfrider Foundation – Emerald Coast Chapter. We welcome this opportunity to inform the community about how our day-to-day behavior can impact our coastal water. Our mission is to create a family event to bring beach lovers of all ages together for a good cause. Surfrider Foundation is to be commended for its continued efforts to educate the public and advocate officials about the importance of clean water so that everyone may continue to use these resources.

A “Clean Water” paddle out will kick off the event followed by paddle board & skim board demonstrations, local art & craft displays, surf movie viewing, surfboard raffle, art auction and door prizes from a variety of local business sponsors.

Paddle boarding sounds fun but I have not seen it done. Ron Jon in Pier Park sells paddle boards. The boards are so long they do not seem practical if you live or stay in a Panama City Beach Condo.

The “Good Vibes” music festival will take from 11am to 8pm and feature 6 reggae-rock/surf music bands – Nothing Short of Pure, Demolition Reggae, Smoke Wagon, Can’t Hang, 20WT (twenty weight) and B-Liminal. Food & Beverage provided by Spinnaker Beach Club, Paradise Grill & Cantina.

For a $10 donation at the door you receive an all day adult pass and a raffle ticket. Children under 12 are admitted free.

Kuhlcher Korner & Spinnaker Beach Club are hosting “Clean Water – Good Vibes” Music & Art Festival to benefit The Surfrider Foundation Emerald Coast Chapter.

Have fun!

Florida Ironman results from the News Herald…Kirill Kotshegarov came to America for the first time this week, and all he got was an Ironman Florida championship.

The 23-year-old Estonian set the tone for a day full of firsts with a win in his Ironman debut Saturday. Not far behind Kotshegarov was Maxim Kriat, a Ukrainian triathlete who also was competing in his first Ironman.

While the men were welcoming rookies to its fraternity, the women watched as Sofie Goos, a relative unknown from Belgium unseated the favorite, five-time winner Bella Bayliss, who fell behind in the swim and ended up a victim of Ironman’s five-win jinx. No triathlete has won a race more than five times, excluding the World Championship.

But as Bayliss limped off, Goos was celebrating her first Ironman win with her father, brother and boyfriend in just her fourth year as a triathlete.

“I’m getting stronger every year, every month actually,” said Goos, 29, who won in 9 hours, 8 minutes, 38 seconds, 3 minutes off the course record. “The second loop when I had to go back (was the hardest). I saw Bella getting angry. It’s amazing (to beat her). I was not really busy with that. I just wanted to get the slot for Hawaii.”

Nothing was new about Tamara Kozulina’s day, however. She finished second here for the second consecutive year in 9 hours, 12 minutes, 47 seconds, about 2 minutes better than her time in 2008.

Kozulina came from behind to catch Bayliss at mile 23 of the run and then pulled ahead to better the local favorite, who finished in 9:13:52.

“I felt strong all the time,” said Kozulina, a Ukrainian native who now lives in Clermont. “I kept my pace. My mistake is to always push hard at the beginning. When I first started doing Ironmans I always went hard at the beginning.”

Kotshegarov’s training schedule kept him busy before he made the trip to Clermont three weeks ago. On top of going to school and studying environmental technology, Kotshegarov spends about 30 hours per week training.

Working with his teammates, Kotshegarov set his goal at breaking 9 hours. Winning his first Ironman wasn’t anywhere near his focus, and when he fell ill earlier this week, it was almost out of the question. But Kotshegarov caught leader Luke McKenzie on the bike and trailed him until Mile 7 of the run.

“I decided to go hard on bike and see how I could hold out on run,” Kotshegarov said.

It worked, and he won in 8:24:29.

Third-place Massimo Cigana understood how training could affect his performance. He’s competed in half-Ironman distance races before, and said he could win with his body, not his head. But in full-distance Ironmans, he needed his head as he completed the 140.6-miles in 8:28:04.

Kriat’s second place finish was a product of patience, on Saturday and all his life. He started training for Ironmans at age 15 with his eyes on competing at 18. But his father told him if he raced at 18, he wouldn’t be able to race again, and that he had to wait until he turned 25.

So shortly after reaching his father’s age of Ironman consent, Kriat finished second in his first Ironman in 8:26:51.

“This is the best day of my life,” Kriat said. “This Ironman is my childhood dream.”

Congratulations to all who participated!!
