Panama City Beach – 9/12 Ike Update

Panama City Beach – Looks like a day to stay off the beach!!

There was high water in PCB on Thursday and the water is expected to return today, according to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee. The water was caused by swells from Hurricane Ike, which is set to hit the Texas coast tonight. Before it’s over, surf in the Panhandle could reach as high as 13 to 18 feet, with a high surf warning in effect Friday morning for all Panhandle beaches, said meteorologist Ron Block with the National Weather Service.

Thursday the waves were rolling, or rather crashing, on Panama City Beach.  Carol Wagner, Beach and Surf supervisor with the Panama City Beach Police Department, reported 25-foot monsters breaking at the second sand bar, and 15- to 20-foot waves pummeling the shoreline.  “It’s hitting the buildings,” she said. “Yeah, it’s bad out here.”  Waves are expected to continue to beat a high mark on local beaches until Hurricane Ike comes onshore in Texas.
