New Year’s Eve revelers here can welcome in the New Year by dancing the night away at a senior center, watching an illuminated beach ball descend at the beach or listen to musicians performing classical works by Johann Strauss Jr. and J.S. Bach.
For those who want an evening without alcohol, the United Methodists of Lynn Haven will hold an Ice Gala at the Holiday Inn Select.
Pier Park holds its third annual Beach Ball Drop celebration beginning at 5:30 p.m., with a “family friendly” drop of 7,000 live beach balls at 8 p.m. A larger-than-life illuminated beach ball will drop at the stroke of midnight, marking the start of 2011. The evening will end with a spectacular fireworks display over the Gulf of Mexico, officials said.
The Panama City Beach Senior Center at the Lyndell Building, located at 423 Lyndell Lane, behind the new library building at Hutchison Boulevard and Lyndell Lane, will hold a New Year’s Eve Dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets are $25 at the Cypress House with music provided by Peter Shelly. Hors d’oeuvres will be served.
The Emerald Coast Chamber Ensemble will hold a New Year’s “Soiree” at 7 p.m. at the Christ the King Episcopal Church in Santa Rosa Beach. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door and $5 for 18 and younger.
During the recital, musicians will perform familiar works by Johann Strauss Jr., J.S. Bach, Frederick Chopin, Felix Mendelssohn and Scott Joplin. Advance tickets are available at Playground Music in Fort Walton Beach, Bayou Books in Niceville, Kitchenique in Destin, Sun Dog Books in Seaside and The 3 Graces Taverna in Sandestin.
At the Ice Gala in Lynn Haven, there will be dancing, food and entertainment beginning at 8 p.m., but no alcohol will be served.
Beach ball drop
The Pier Park Beach Ball Drop, now in only its third year, has fast become a holiday favorite in Panama City Beach, with thousands turning out for the illuminated ball drop and fireworks at midnight.
The fireworks at the city pier, across from Pier Park, will be coordinated with fireworks from the county pier.
Felicia Cook, Pier Park director of marketing and business development, said prize drawings will be held at Pier Park throughout the evening, such as vacations from event sponsors like Wyndham Resorts, a surfboard from Ron Jon Surf Shop and tickets from Southwest Airlines.
The family celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. with The Barry Fish Band and children’s entertainment, along with the release of 7,000 bouncing beach balls provided by Wyndham from netting strung out along the street between Five Guys and Tootsies at 8 p.m.
The main countdown to New Year’s will begin at 8:45 p.m. with special performances from Nothing Short of Pure, The Springs and event headliner Gloriana, who will begin at 10:45 p.m. Gloriana was named the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Vocal Group for 2010.
The party will continue after midnight with a performance by the Steve Youngblood Band.
