Panama City Beach – Mike Huckabee brings book tour to Pier Park December 9, 2010

PANAMA CITY BEACH — Former Arkansas governor and GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is coming to Borders in Pier Park between 4 and 5 p.m. Dec. 9 to do a book signing for his books, “A Simple Christmas” and “Can’t Wait Till Christmas.”

“A Simple Christmas” is being re-released because of its success. It is book for adults that is filled with narratives from Huckabee’s life.  “It reflects on what Christmas really means, especially in this downturned economy,” Huckabee said.  “Can’t Wait Till Christmas” is a story from “A Simple Christmas” that Huckabee and his publishers decided to make into a children’s story.

“It’s just a fun book to read to kids,” Huckabee said. “It’s a funny story that is true of me and my sister.”  The story is about Huckabee and his sister when they were kids during Christmas. When their parents were at work, they would unwrap the presents under the Christmas tree and play with them. One particular Christmas, Mike Huckabee’s parents got him a J.C. Higgins football from Sears. He unwrapped the present and played with it, then re-wrapped it. When Christmas came around he unwrapped the football and there was mud on it. His parents saw the mud and figured out what Mike and his sister were up to.  “They were upset,” Huckabee said. “We broke their trust. Christmas is not a time to get your stuff, it’s about your family, it’s about trust, and we violated that.”

Huckabee designed the book to make it relatable to kids. It also creates an opportunity for parents and their children to talk about the real meaning of Christmas.  “It’s about the relationships we have with God and each other,” Huckabee said, “not the extravagance that it has become.”  Huckabee explained that in the first chapter of “A Simple Life,” he tells the story of the birth of Christ. He did that to show his audience that even in the worst situations, in your lowest moment is when God shows up.

“Especially during this economy people might think this will be their worst Christmas,” Huckabee said, “but I want to show them that it can be their best.”  “Can’t Wait Till Christmas” was designed so it was easily understandable for children. “I wanted to make sure that 4-year-olds and a Congressman could understand what I was saying,” Huckabee said.

Panama City Beach Twin piers to hold dedication fests Today October 22, 2010

PANAMA CITY BEACH — The city and county fishing piers will hold twin celebrations Friday to mark the official completion of both structures.

The county will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the county’s M.B. Miller Pier at 2 p.m. followed by a rededication of the city’s Russell-Fields Pier at 4 p.m.

Admission will be free at both 1,500-foot piers all day Friday with a simultaneous fireworks display at 8 p.m.

The city pier has been open since July 2009 and the county pier had a “soft opening” in July this year. Both piers have now completed their operations and concessions buildings and ticket booths at the north base of each structure.

During the city ceremony outdoor writer Scott Lindsey will talk about Dan Russell and Elgin “Popeye” Fields Jr., respectively, the two men whom the pier is named after, according to assistant city manager Mario Gisbert.  Gisbert said the concession stand at the city pier – Hookd Pier Café – will hold its grand opening and provide free food. Free food will also be provided by Buffalo Wild Wings, Reggae J’s Island Grill and Back Porch Seafood & Oyster House. There will also be live music.

At the county pier, officials will hold a ribbon-cutting and make a few remarks about the history of the pier and the importance of the pier to the community. Cake and light refreshments will also be provided, county spokesperson Valerie Lovett said.

The fishing contest over several weekends between the city and county piers, which began three weeks ago, also continues Friday and concludes Nov. 21.  Gisbert said the winners for each weekend so far in the four categories of Spanish mackerel, flounder, king mackerel and pompano will be recognized during the city activities Friday. The fishing competition begins each Friday at 5 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. on Sunday at both piers.  A total of $1,200 in prizes will be awarded each weekend and the four persons with the heaviest catch overall in each category will win an annual pass to both piers for one year.
