Panama City Beach – Airport

There was good news for those of us that support the new Panama City Beach Airport on Thursday because a federal judge in Jacksonville declined to issue a preliminary injunction against the new airport in West Bay.  Several environmental groups requested the injunction as part of a lawsuit against the Army Corps of Engineers.  The groups want to reverse a permit issued by the corps that allows the Airport Authority to build a new airport in West Bay.

Who knows what the environmental groups will try next.  Hopefully the efforts to stop the airport construction will end and the construction will begin full force.

Panama City Beach – Lottery Winner!!

Lucky Lottery Store Nearby…Al Falkenstein of Santa Rosa Beach won $131,494.87 in Florida’s “Fantasy Five” lottery game this week.  Falkenstein bought the ticket at the Circle K at 10685 Emerald Coast Parkway in Miramar Beach. A second $131,000 winner bought their ticket in Jacksonville. At the Circle K, cashier Kate Gillis is quick to tell customers, “We are the luckiest store. Everybody is a winner.”  Gillis and the other employees have a ritual to impart good fortune to ticket buyers: Sheila Wharton rubs the ticket for good luck, then store manager Linda Lowe kisses it. Nancy Tucker will then say “Good luck! When you hit it big, come and see me.”  Lowe said it is the first time the store has ever sold a winning ticket with that big of a jackpot. $131,000 is very far from the biggest jackpot won in Destin, however. The city boasted a $1.74 million Lotto winner in 1991 and a $2.07 million win in 1994. The latter jackpot, however, went unclaimed. Lowe, who lives by the rule of “random acts of kindness,” said she hopes the winner does great things with the money.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night were 3-6-21-28-32. 381 tickets matching four numbers won $111 each. Another 11,240 tickets matching three numbers won $10.50 each, and 113,412 tickets won a Quick Pick ticket for picking two numbers.

Good Luck!!

Panama City Beach – Red Snapper Fishing Season

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission begins a two-day meeting today at the Bay Point Marriott, and area charter fishermen are bracing for proposed new regulations that would, among other things, shorten the red snapper fishing season. The current season in Florida waters runs from April 15 to Oct. 31, with a bag limit of four fish. To become consistent with red snapper regulations in federal Gulf of Mexico waters, the FWC is recommending the recreational red snapper season be reduced to June 1 through Sept. 30 in state-managed waters, which extend about 9 miles off the coast. The proposed red snapper rules appear on the FWC’s Thursday agenda.

Panama City Beach – Pier Park

According to The Greater Panama City Beaches Chamber of Commerce:

Announcing more great places to shop and eat at Pier Park –  Shoppers will delight in the new options including fine jewelry at Carlyle & Co, stylish women’s apparel at Cache and the best in video game and entertainment software at GameStop. When the hunger pangs strike, Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries and Rocky’s South Philly Cheesesteaks will offer up their irresistible sandwiches.

Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries, the burger restaurant with a strong cult following, is set to open at the Boardwalk at Pier Park in February 2008. The menu at Five Guys is simple: burgers, hotdogs, fries, veggies, grilled cheese sandwiches and beverages.  The burgers are hand pattied daily and made to order with 100% American Beef that is preservative free and never frozen.  The fries are whole potatoes, cut daily, soaked in water and then cooked to order in no-trans-fat peanut oil and may be ordered with or without Cajun seasoning.  The rolls are shipped in fresh from the Five Guys bakery and do not contain fillers or artificial preservatives.  Kosher hot dogs are served split and grilled plain, or topped with cheese and bacon. I can’t wait to try Five Guys!

Investors and business owners are trying to make Pier Park be the premiere ‘lifestyle center’ for all retail, entertainment, and dining pleasures in Panama City Beach, and across the Emerald Coast.  The Pier Park concept will clearly stand out as the number one ‘destination location’ for not only year-round local residents, but also for vacationing families.

Pier Park patrons will soon see why the GameStop store is unique in the video game and entertainment software retailing industry.

Stylish women will love visiting Cache again and again at Pier Park. Cache targets women between the ages of 25 and 45 who have a youthful attitude, are self-confident and fashion-conscious, and require a missy fit.

Rocky’s South Philly Cheesesteaks will bring Panama City Beach a traditional steak sandwich which Philadelphians have been enjoying for many years.  The management staff is actually moving from South Philadelphia to Panama City Beach to serve you your favorites – from the authentic cheesesteak, pizzasteaks, sausage and pepper hoagies to a Philadelphia TastyKake desert.  Rocky’s will also be serving fresh boardwalk fries for a taste of neighboring Atlantic City.

Carlyle & Co. Jewelers will open a new store at Pier Park with brands such as Rolex, TAG Heuer, David Yurman, JB Star, Mikimoto, Roberto Coin and John Hardy.

Pier Park is sounding better all the time!!

Panama City Airport Update 2/5/08

The saga continues…just hours after construction crews began work at the new Panama City-Bay County International Airport site Monday morning; two Florida-based environmental groups launched a new legal attack on the project.  In a hearing in U.S. District Court in Jacksonville on Monday, attorneys for the Florida Clean Water Network Inc. and Citizens for the Bay Inc. sought to block the Section 404 permit and a “biological opinion” by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service that formed part of the permit approval.  The named defendants were Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District Commander Col. Paul L. Grosskruger and USFWS Panama City Field Office project leader Gail Carmody and their respective organizations.

The presiding judge set a hearing for Feb. 14 on the request for a permanent injunction, but declined to issue an interim stay on the Section 404 permit prior to the hearing.
